SBA Tailgate and Reminder about tomorrow’s events

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Hey yo,

For anyone going to the football game tonight, and even for everyone not, we’ll be firing up the grill around 5pm with free burgers and hot dogs. We’re out of veggie burgers, but of course anyone is welcomed to bring whatever you’d like to throw on the grill: chicken, duck, yeti, whatever your flavor is, we can char it beyond any amount of that flavor.

As for tomorrow, here’s the schedule

5 pm: Welcome Back Happy Hour at Christy’s until the kegs run out. Soda will also be provided.

If you bring an item for Advocates for Children and you get a wristband to go to their happy hour at…

7:30: Happy Hour for Advocates for Children at Mac’s. They are buying the first 100 20oz beers and there will be a limited amount of Free pizza.

After Party for both events is: Arlin’s at Clifton and Ludlow. $1 beers. The Arlin’s specials start right after the Christy’s ones run out, but the first 100 beers at Mac’s are free if you donate to Advocates for Children. So you could easily run this circuit: free beer at Christy’s, free beer at Mac’s, dollar beer at Arlin’s.

Getting from Christy’s or Mac’s to Arlin’s is simple, you can hop on the 17, 18, OR 19 buses right in front of the main entrance to school (by the intersection of Clifton and Straight) for free with your UC ID, and get off at Clifton and Ludlow. Also, program this number into your phones: Yellow Cab - 513.241.2100. Be advised, it takes forever for cabs to get to places.

Any questions? Reply to all! (just kidding).

Recommended SBA Budget for 2008-2009

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

All,

Attached is the SBA budget recommended by the Budget Committee. This year’s requests were descriptive and much more reasonable than last year’s. No requests for coat racks this time. Thank you. Your efforts made the budgeting easier. But the process of setting an achievable budget was still difficult.

Some statistics:
—$14,400 was available to fund student groups
—29 requests were submitted
—$42,688 was requested

No students chose to attend the budget committee’s three and half hour meeting last Sunday. So to provide transparency the following is a summary of the committee’s process and reasoning:

Each group’s request was individually reviewed and discussed by the full budget committee. As prescribed by the bylaws we considered the following factors:

—Educational value of the programs;
—Number of students in the organization;
—Number of students who will benefit from the programs;
—Benefit of the programs to the law school and the community as a whole;
—Past performance and use of allocated funds by the group;
—Merits of the programs.

As in past years we declined to fund any travel-related expenses, national membership dues, alcohol, or journal subscriptions. These reductions did not bring us close to the $14,400.

We then scrutinized proposed food spending. We reduced the per head food budgets of some groups to bring them in line with the majority of the food budgets, e.g. from $7/head to $3/head. We also struck funding for some meetings altogether when the proposed number of meeting was out of line with the number of meetings the majority of groups proposed. Additionally, no funding was awarded for “executive” meetings, meetings of only four or five members.

Groups not chartered by the SBA were not awarded any funding at this time. These groups may request funding from the contingency fund once the budget is approved. $1,600 of the contingency fund will be available each semester.

These steps got us close the $14,400 so we further reduced all group budgets by ~8%. No group’s funding was reduced below $200.

The full SBA senate will vote up or down on the budget at this Friday’s meeting.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me or any of the Budget Committee members before Friday’s meeting.

Informational Meeting for Human Rights Quarterly

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

I hope everyone’s first week of real classes is off to a great start!

You may remember mention of the Human Rights Quarterly (better known as HRQ) from the Club Crawl. We’re having an informational meeting for 1Ls who are interested in becoming cite checkers on Thursday, September 4th at 12:15 in room 104. Lunch will be provided.

In case you’re wondering, you don’t need any special skills or interests to become a cite checker; we’ll teach you what you need to know at our training session on September 17th. HRQ provides a great way exposure to a variety of issues (human rights, international law, political science, sociology, etc.). So please stop by, have some lunch, ask questions, and let us know you’re interested!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me (ganslese@email.uc.edu) or Eric Vang (vangeb@email.uc.edu).

We look forward to seeing you next Thursday!

First Student Ambassadors Meeting 9/4 at 12:10 in Room 118

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008
Dear Second and Third Year Students,
I’d like to invite those of you who aren’t current members of Student Ambassadors to attend our first meeting of the year and sign up to join or just learn more about the group. Since you’ve all been at the law school for at least a year now, the only “orientation” to the group that new members will need will be a quick overview of the tour procedure and our policies as a group. If you’re new, just see me right after the meeting and we’ll arrange a time to meeting and “orient” you! Also, if you’re new and would like to join the listserve to receive information about upcoming events we need volunteers for, please sign up for the Student Ambassadors TWEN cite.
Welcome back! It was wonderful to see many of you who volunteered this past week to help with orientation activities. Now that we’re all back, I hope the first day went well for everyone!
We will be holding our first meeting of the year next week on Thursday, September 4th from 12:10pm-1pm in room 118. Please arrive as promptly as possible as we have several items of business to tend to…
1. Everyone will be signing up for their office hour for the semester so please BRING YOUR SCHEDULES WITH YOU to the meeting.
2. We will be electing a new VP of the group so come ready with nominations and the democratic spirit (that is “democratic” in the “let’s encourage democracy” sense rather than the liberal “Mandy get off the left-wing high horse you’re always on” sense)
NOTE: I have heard from two people who are interested in the position so PLEASE NOTIFY ME IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN RUNNING and would like to put your name on the list prior to the meeting. We will take nominations from the floor as well.
3. We will be updating our contact information spreadsheet so for those of you who recently moved, make sure you know your new zip code and address :)
4. We’ll be discussing plans for the year so get excited!!
5. We’ll be asking for a volunteer to visit Hanover University to represent UC law on Thursday, September 25th so check your calendars.
6. We’ll be taking a GROUP PHOTO for potential use on the website so warm up your smiley face!
I look so forward to seeing everyone there. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND PLEASE LET ME KNOW so that I can get your contact information and office hour preference recorded.
Please don’t hesitate to direct any questions or comments to me before the meeting. See you all soon!
Love,
Mandy

SBA Welcome Back Happy Hour and Advocates for Children Event

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Hey everyone,

Here’s the details on the welcome back events THIS FRIDAY.

Starting at 5:00 there will be free beer and soda at Christy’s on McMillan. Word on the street is everyone’s favorite librarian Don Blair is having a retirement party at Christy’s at the same time. So stop by, mix with some old friends, meet some new ones, and wish Don “Polar” Blair well as he goes on his journey to see the Great Spirit on the Mountain, or repairs to his lair for years of fly fishing, or whatever it is he plans to do.

At Christy’s, if you make a dontation to Advocates for Children’s back to school supplies drive (in supplies or cold, hard $$$) you’ll get a wristband that will get you free beer and pizza at Mac’s that night after Christy’s at an event there sponsored by Advocates for Children.

After that, or if you aren’t able to donate to AFC, SBA will have $1 beer specials at Arlin’s Bar & Restaurant at 307 Ludlow in Clifton the rest of the night. Arlin’s has an awesome deck and surly bartenders. What’s not to love?

It goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway, NO ONE SHOULD DRINK AND DRIVE. Especially people in law school who might later make money defending people who do. Getting from Christy’s or Mac’s to Arlin’s is simple, you can hop on the 17, 18, OR 19 buses right in front of the main entrance to school (by the intersection of Clifton and Straight) for free with your UC ID, and get off at Clifton and Ludlow. If you drink and drive, Don Blair will cry, and so will your parents. And so will the baby Jesus. Please don’t drink and drive. Drink and bus is encouraged (and fun). Rumor has it not drinking can be fun too, so if that’s your bag, please don’t feel like you aren’t welcomed. These events are mainly put on by SBA so we can mix with old friends and meet new ones (and stalk Don Blair.)

See everyone at the SBA and AFC events on Friday!

p.s. he’s watching you…..

Welcome Back!

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Hello everyone, and welcome back to the show that never ends.

You may have noticed some physical changes around school. We leave it up to you to determine if they are improvements.

We have new tables for outdoor escapades. By escapades, we were thinking eating, drinking, meeting and the like. We’re supposed to also remind you that university regulations prohibit smoking within 25 feet of building entrances/exits. We again leave it to you to do the math.

The tables were a gift from SBA to former Dean of Students Barb Watts, who’d always wanted students to have a place for outdoor escapades. She loved the tables, and a special thank you goes to Law Women and the Public Interest Law Group for allowing some of their SBA budgets to be used towards this project. (apologies for the overuse of “escapades”, it really is an all-encompassing word.)

We also have a new Rec Room in room 112 on the first floor. Room 112 had been used for storage. But thanks to the efforts of students and staff alike, we completely cleaned out the room and reclaimed it. There’s a ping pong table and a foosball table in there currently. Look for improvements within the week. We certainly welcome suggestions. We’ll be adding a dart board at the very least. The room is currently open for student use, feel free to swing by any time and enjoy what’s in there so far.

Hopefully within the week, there will also be improvements to the Student Activities Lounge in 117. We’ve already added a donated couch, and the old ones will be cleaned and washed. We’re also hoping to add some coffee machines with coffee for students to make whenever we want. Be on the lookout for that soon as well.

We’re also developing a cultural program for students, and a campus events committee to better publicize events on campus (intramurals, speakers, sporting events, etc.) Look for notes on both in the weeks to come.

We also bought a really nice grill for student use, and will be breaking it out THIS THURSDAY in honor of UC’s first home football game starting around 430. Feel free to stop by and enjoy some burgers and dogs before the football game, or before you attend the Law Dems Convention Watch party at Mac’s. I think we’re out of veggie burgers, so if you want some, you have to bring your own.

The first SBA meeting takes place THIS FRIDAY at 1230 in room 114. The agenda for that meeting will follow in an email later tonight. All are welcomed to attend. Lunch will be provided. Additionally, every SBA meeting for the entire year is listed in your planners, and will be listed on the calendar on www.uclawsba.com and on SBA’s hard calendar to be posted on the board between 100A and 100B.

The first social events are this Friday. Separate email to follow.

If you have ANY questions, comments, problems, concerns, please let us know.

Thanks everyone! Welcome back!
